In our Team Interview series we have already introduced many members of our team. We started with our founders, Daniel and Simon. This was followed by our Chief Sales Officer, Larissa, and our expert in Data Science, Aswathy.
Now we would like to introduce our Chief Technical Officer, Kevin, who has been part of our growing team since April 2019. But before we start our interview, where Kevin talks about his work before and at 100W, as well as many other things, we would like to clarify what a CTO does in general.
What does a Chief Technical Officer do anyway?
As Chief Technical Officer (CTO) you are responsible for the proper functioning of the technical infrastructure and equipment of a company. In most cases, a CTO is also significantly involved in the technical aspects of product development. He is also responsible for the profitability of the development. But what are the tasks of our CTO? And what did he do before he started working for us, what does he like most about 100W and what does he do in his spare time? Kevin reports all this and more in the following interview.
1. What is your name, when is your birthday and what is your position at 100 words?
"My name is Kevin Hendel, I was born on 09.07.1992. At 100W I am Chief Technical Officer (CTO) and responsible for product development."
2. What were you doing before 100W?
"After finishing school I studied information technology in Mannheim, at the dual university, and then worked as a software developer in a large company. There I had the opportunity to complete my master's degree in Data Science and Business Analytics as a part-time course of study as part of a master's program."
3. how did you come up with 100W?
"During my master's degree I met Simon, one of the founders of 100W, and that's how I found out about the company. Although we talked about a possible cooperation again and again during the course of the studies, it took two years until it became a concrete plan. For me personally, after working in larger companies, it was exciting to be able to work in a start-up company and be involved in its development. That was the reason why I chose to work at 100W."
Kevin's duties as Chief Technical Officer
4. What are your duties as Chief Technical Officer?
"At 100 words, I take care of the planning and lead the development of our products. On a technical level, I try to harmonize the visions we have as a team with the requirements of the customers so that we can constantly improve and expand our range of products. I am the contact person for technical questions and decisions and coordinate the work of our development team. In doing so, I keep an overview of our sub-projects and compile the results".
5. What do you like most about your tasks?
"I really like the fact that I can directly influence the development of the products and thus the development of the company. Because we develop products from scratch, we can build on the latest technologies. It's great fun to plan new projects and then see how they take shape."
6. What do you like the most about 100 words as a company?
"I like the exciting idea behind 100 words and the constant development of the company that you experience. The topics we deal with are very current and on everyone's lips. In our daily work there is always open communication between all members of the team. The perceptible motivation of everyone helps to ensure that excellent results can be seen quickly".
Which tips do you have for someone who wants to work in a start-up?
"Especially if you have worked for a long time at a larger and perhaps longer established company, it can be very refreshing to work at a start-up. From my own experience I can say that it is worthwhile to get to know both sides at some point. So my tip is to give it a try and see for yourself how the work in a startup works. If you are motivated, you can definitely be successful here".
8. What do you like to do in your free time?
"In my free time I like to relax with my partner and our dog. However, in keeping with my job, I also like to deal with everything to do with technology and computers."
- Do you have a life motto?
"I do not have a formulated motto for life. However, one resolution that I always try to live by is to use everything I do to learn and develop myself."
