Data Science 2

Our Team Interview series continues today with our head of the Data Science Team, Lutz. In the Team Interview with Aswathy, who is part of our Data Science Team, we have already explained the tasks of a Data Scientist.

It consists of systematically evaluating data and extracting knowledge. This knowledge is then used to support management in making strategic decisions. In order to fulfill the tasks of the data scientist, he or she needs knowledge in different areas such as information technology and mathematics.

Lutz is not only part of our Data Science Team, but also leads it. What exactly are his tasks? What did he was doing before 100W, what does he like the most about his work with us and what does he like to do in his spare time? He tells all this and more in his interview.

1. What is your name and what is your position at 100W?

"My name is Lutz Büch and I am leading the Data Science Team at 100W"

2. What did you do 100W ago?

"Before my time at 100W I worked as a research assistant at the University of Heidelberg to finance my PhD in computer science. It hasn't been done yet either - now I continue to work on it in my spare time."

3. How did you come to 100W?

"I got to know 100W at the Jobunication in Heidelberg. Since I was watching the lecture "Personality and Its Transformations" on YouTube, my interest in the topic of personality was very current. Two months later I signed the employment contract and another three months later I started working at 100W."

4. What are your duties as head of our Data Science Team?

"In our R&D we try to improve text analysis with Natural Language Understanding. I supervise interns who support us and enrich us with their fresh view and different backgrounds. Together with employees I discuss progress and problems of projects and we decide who does what. From outside R&D we get feedback from customers and define new goals. Then I work on experimental studies and the implementation of solutions in the backend. Regularly reading blog feeds, newsletters and conference proceedings keeps me up to date on the state of the art and how NLP is applied in science and industry".

5. What do you like the most about your tasks?

"What I like most is that we have a lot of freedom and personal responsibility at work. It helps me to work creatively and it gives me motivation to look for good solutions. Flexibility in working hours and location (home office) is also important to me. This makes it easier for me to combine work with commuting and my final thesis".

6. what do you like most about 100W as a company?

"The fast decisions, the open atmosphere, the flexibility and the cosmopolitanism."

7. what tips do you have for someone who wants to work in a start-up or start a business?

"If you want to work in a start-up, you should have flexibility. Decision-making processes are short, everything moves rather quickly. Depending on your personality, you may or may not like it.

Of course, I don't have any experience in setting up a company. I can only refer you to Simon and Daniel and to this essay by Paul Graham: "How to get startup ideas"

8. What do you like to do in your free time?data-science-team-bienen-schwarm

"While commuting and doing housework, I regularly listen to podcasts and radio reports. I like standup comedy. In spring and early summer I am partly occupied with beekeeping on the two bee colonies I harvest with a friend. And I have some programming projects that I'm slowly putting into practice."

9. Do you have a life motto?

"Be water" - Bruce Lee ;-D "
